Summary of the Western Pacific Region Index Medicus (WPRIM) Meeting and the Asia Pacific Association of Medical Journal Editors (APAME) Convention 2017, Vientiane, Laos

Our event in Vientiane started on 17th August 2017 with WPRIM and APAME meetings at the University of Health Sciences. Thirteen temporary advisors, seven observers and two WHO staffs participated in the WPRIM meeting. Representatives of national selection committees from 8 member states; China, Japan, Korea, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Mongolia attended this meeting. There were no representatives from Brunei, Cambodia, Fiji, Papua New Guinea and Viet Nam. We discussed about the current status of current WPRIM database, new WPRIM platform, and approved all the recommended new journals. This was followed by discussions on the training workshops, and other WPRIM activities.

APAME board meeting followed WPRIM meeting. We had reports from four committees; Editorial Policy and Ethics Committee, Education Committee, IT and Library Committee, APAMED Central Committee, followed by a summary of the WPRIM meeting conducted earlier. Survey on the national educational programs was proposed as an activity of Education Committee. APAME will promote APAMED central to other nations in the Asia Pacific region. The APAME convention 2018 was discussed. The board decided to have the APAME 2018 convention at the IBP International Convention Center in Bogor, Indonesia on 17-19 July, 2018, in conjunction with the convention of the Council of Asian Science Editors (CASE). The meeting ended with a small ceremony to recognize the contributions of Charles Patrick Raby and Marie Villemin Partow to WPRIM and APAME. Charles Patrick Raby at the Office for the South East Asian Region of WHO will retire from WHO in September 2017 and Marie Villemin Partow at the Office for the Western Pacific Region of WHO will be promoted to a new position at the WHO headquarter in Geneva in November 2017. Despite the absence of Charles Patrick Raby at this meeting, the APAME board produced a photobook with signatures of all those present to be delivered to him.

The subsequent two days of APAME Convention (18th to 19th August 2017) started with an opening ceremony that was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phouthone Meuangpak, the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health, Dr Phouthone Vangkonevilay, President of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) and Wilfred Peh, the president of APAME. There were more than 80 participants from various institutions (Annex 1) in Lao PDR. Forty faculty and participants from members from 18 countries including Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, India, Japan, Korea (South), Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, United States, Vietnam.

There were six plenary lectures presented by Boungnong Boupha (Lao PDR), Sung-Tae Hong (Korea), Marie Villemin Partow (WHO), José Florencio Lapeña (Philippines), Nicholas Talley (Australia) and Choon Shil Lee (Korea). We had 10 sessions with 33 lectures over the two day convention: Peter Munk, Tyler Coupal (Canada), Fang An (China), Sam Mathew, Supriya Shanbhag, Sucharita Kundu (India), Trevor Lane, Masamichi Kitagawa, Kiyoshi Kitamura (Japan), Sung-Tae Hong, Hee-Jin Yang, Jeong-Wook Seo, Choi Yong (Korea), Sengchanh Kounnavong, Siphone Sengsoulichanh, Mayfong Mayxay, Ketsomsouk Bouphavanh, Outavong Phathammavong (Lao PDR), José Florencio Lapeña (Philippines), Wilfred CG Peh (Singapore), Amorn Leelarasamee, Somkiat Wattanasirichaigoon, Sakda Vallibhakara (Thailand), Lekhraj Rampal, Saw Aik (Malaysia), Allison Alley (US), Alma Mila Prosperoso, and Marie Villemin (WHO). We would also like to thank those who contributed as chair persons during these sessions, and they included Allison Alley, Amorn Leelarasamee, Burmaajav Badrakh, Erlinda Palaganas, Jeong-Wook Seo, José Florencio Lapeña, Ketsomsouk Bouphavanh, Kiyoshi Kitamura, Lekhraj Rampal, Marie Villemin, Masamichi Kitagawa, Mayfong Mayxay, Merlita M. The welcome dinner was well prepared and the cultural performance was excellent. The participants and cultural artists danced together. Faculty and participants were encouraged to mix and interact during the casual event.

Lecture presentation files are uploaded at the Laospace (, the institutional repository of Lao PDR, for archiving in their permanent addresses and for easier access through Google Scholar. We would like to thank Bansa Oupathana who served as a moderator for the whole scientific program, not forgetting Mayfong Mayxay for his communications with the international committees and faculties. Once all the account and basic information of the APAME2017 convention have been finalized, we will be able to have a better information of the final status of the event. We can then proceed with the APAME2018 Convention. Details of this convention will be informed to all parties as soon as possible.
